Building Your Village

We cannot do the work that we do without the support of individual volunteers, organizations, donors, and sponsors. If you have a passion for helping people living with diabetes or raising awareness of diabetes prevention, please join our team. It is through the collective efforts of committed volunteers and advocates that we can build a village that will truly make a difference in our community’s health and quality of life.

Volunteer

We welcome and encourage your participation in our critical work. You can donate your time, expertise, and financial resources to make a change in the trajectory of diabetes in Virginia. We have four distinct focus areas from which you can choose: Advocacy, Diabetes Prevention, Diabetes Management, and Diabetes in Schools. You can also request to join our board or work on a specific project. Our current projects include restructuring VDC in order to provide resources to better accomplish our mission. With that, we will be focusing on creating a strategic plan for continued growth and sustainability.

Advocacy

The Advocacy Workgroup monitors Virginia legislation and regulations having a real or potential impact on diabetes prevention and management. When necessary, members advocate for changes in bills and/or regulations. The workgroup also keeps an eye on federal legislation and CMS regulations, primarily by notice from our national organizations. We welcome those with interest in joining our workgroup. Diabetes Prevention

In this initiative, we work to increase awareness of prediabetes as well as ways to reduce the risk of diabetes. We connect and empower organizations offering the CDC’s National Diabetes Prevention Program to help grow programs and share wisdom. Contact info@virginiadiabetes.org

Living with Diabetes

Also known as Diabetes Self-Management. Here volunteers focus on improving diabetes program availability and sustainability across the state, as well as raising awareness of diabetes management to all Virginians. For more information, email  info@virginiadiabetes.org.

Diabetes in Schools

This work involves providing documents such as the Virginia Diabetes Medical Management Plan, ensuring standardized care for children with diabetes in school systems across Virginia. Volunteers also may speak with legislators and institutional leaders to support policies and laws that focus on students with diabetes. To learn more, contact Jackie McManemin at jackie@virginiadiabetes.org.

VDC will be embarking on a restructure and strategic plan during the 2022-2023 fiscal year. If you are interested in volunteering your talents to assist, please contact Melanie Barthlow at melanie@virginiadiabetes.org.
